Nadah has been working on new music and collaborations throughout the year. As she starts 2021 with Nyege Nyege's artists residency in Kampala, here's a glimpse (or several) of what she's been up to last year.
Apocope approaches the cut-off point of a pop operative. An ‘apocope’ is a word truncated—a sound omitted—moulded into a shape that rolls off of the tongue yet carries within it further significance. Together as C.A.N.V.A.S; Lugh, Olan Monk and Elvin Brandhi invited Alpha Maid, Bashar Suleiman, Billy Bultheel, Hulubalang and Nadah El Shazly to join them in excavating ‘POP’—a boundless yet always personal subject, specific to context and forms of co-existence.
Seven intense Egyptian shaabi remixes by Cairo's finest, including "sekket el amwal" by Nadah El-Shazly. "Delirious selection of pressurised electro-chaabi, Egyptian grime and dancehall from the Cairo new wave; ZULI, 1127, 3Phaz, ABADIR, Nadah El-Shazly, KZLK & Youssef Abouzeid, brought to you by one of the boldest labels in the world; Nashazphone."
In her new show on Cashmere Radio, Nadah El Shazly takes an in-depth look at the music of the period 1890-1920 in Egypt, and at how Egyptian recording companies and labels influenced music production back in the 1920s.
A collaboration with full-time artist, fashion designer and musician Ican Harem, the MC and hype man of Gabber Modus Operandi, an accidental project founded by Ican and producer Kasimyn, and born out of a shared obsession for all sorts of high-octane, fast-paced sounds.
Guest mix including such artists as ZULI, Porest, Judgitzu and Slikback.
Released November 9, 2020 via Morphine Records
Raed Yassin and Paed Conca based their project PRAED on the research between Shaabi and Mouled and the hypnotic structures of both these genres. Repetitive beats, loud Mizmar and loads of energy, with a strong influence from psychedelic rock, free jazz and electronica.
Artists and researchers from all over the globe compose personal letters sharing their takes on the situation. Nadah contributes with a direct and desperate call for spirits, in video format, based on old Arabic scriptures and mythology books about monsters and otherworldly creatures.
Through the dark corners of Egypt’s electronic music underworld with a special curation forced to navigate the current social restrictions and safety measures of the covid era. The material was compiled from a series of studio visits, a trip to Alexandria and a 12 hour party by the bent pyramid of Dahshur.
