Alternative music from the Arab world in Sweden: concerts, residencies and collaborations this month

This week, we’re in Malmö at Inter Arts Center’s Red Room with the seven piece band Karkhana, featuring Michael Zerang on drums, cymbals & percussion; Sam Shalabi on oud & electric guitar; Mazen Kerbaj on trumpet, objects & percussion; Maurice Louca on electric organ, synthesizers & fx; Sharif Sehnaoui on electric guitar; Umut Çağlar on double reeds, bamboo flutes, percussion and gimbri and Tony Elieh on electric bass & fx. They have been developing new material, which they will share in an open studio session on Sunday here in the Red Room at 8pm, as well as in performances in Gothenburg and in Stockholm.

At Elektronmusikstudion Stockholm, more Irtijal Lab alumnis continue to pay visits. In December, Egyptian producer Nur was there and this month, from Cairo, Cherif El-Masri arrives from 16-18 Jan followed by Beirut based duo Stress / Distress from 16-23 Jan.
