Sweden as a hub for Arabic Music

Overview

The “Sweden as a creative hub for Arabic Music” project was implemented from July 2016 to January 2017 as a series of sub-projects in the form of residencies, collaborations, performances, workshops and artist talks in Sweden and Lebanon, with artists from Sweden, Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine and Tunisia. The core philosophy of the project is about inhabiting genres where Arabic music is not usually found in Sweden; thus achieving a double edged outcome by enriching particular music scenes in Sweden such as electronic music, folk and rock with new inspirations and influences from the Arab world, whilst giving outstanding musicians from the Arab world the opportunity to experience more advanced tools and practices in such genres within Sweden.

Sub-Projects

Irtijal Lab

A major workshop was delivered in Beirut in collaboration with EMS and Irtijal festival, with co-funding from the Arab Fund for Arts & Culture. The workshop is now in its second phase, ending in a group show and solo performances within Iritijal 2017. The workshop was extremely successful, led by Mats Lindstron and Daniel Araya from EMS with participants from Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq and Lebanon.

Irtijal Lab
